Brand
NISSEN日泉ケーブル · Kishiwada, Osaka
NISSEN (日泉ケーブル) is a bicycle cable maker in Kishiwada, Osaka, Japan. It opened in 1948 making springs for weaving looms, later began making bicycle brake wire, and took its current name, Nissen Cable, in 1973. For many years it has made OEM cables for bicycle makers, brake makers and wholesalers.
Nissen processes and sells bicycle brake outer casing and inner wire in Japan: stainless cables, vintage cables reissued from 1950s to 1970s Europe, and cables in special lengths for bikes such as tandems. A brand that has spent decades refining what you feel at your fingertips when you pull a lever.

Quality
Before shipping, Nissen tensile-tests every lot, and when packing, staff check each cable by eye and by touch for scratches or dirt. Cables with leftover oil, any kink at all, or frayed ends are all rejected. With inspection this strict, around 1 to 2% of every lot cannot be shipped.
The nipple (taiko) at the end of the inner cable is made to a tensile standard of at least 240 kgf, stricter than the 150 kgf of the Japanese JIS standard. However strong a cable is, it is dangerous if the end is poorly made.

Rust-resistant stainless instead of steel. It keeps its original smoothness through rain and sweat.

A standard inner cable has 19 strands. SP31 tightly twists 31 strands of different thicknesses, so it is more flexible and stretches less.

Every cable is checked by eye and by hand. Only those that pass are packed and shipped.

The stainless coil shows through a clear colour coating. One line of outer completes the look of the bike.

The Range
From inner cable to outer casing. The easiest way to transform your braking and shifting.
31-strand stainless with slick finishing and electrodeposition coating. A flexible, low-stretch inner cable with a light pull.
Stainless coil, clear colour coating and polyethylene liner. 27 colours for brake and shift.
Direct with less compression, Premium with a PTFE liner, and Ver.3 for 11-speed shifting.
A reissue of 1950s to 1970s European round-wire casing. With a liner added, it performs like a modern cable.
An aluminium outer at half the weight, and a reissued set of 1960s to 70s Campagnolo spring outer.

Inner Cable
SP31Special Stainless Inner
A standard inner cable is twisted from 19 strands. SP31 has 31. Using strands of different thicknesses inside makes it more flexible, and the tight twist leaves fewer gaps between strands. That makes it easier to install through tight routing around the bars, and with less stretch there is less re-adjustment after fitting. Breaking strength is also about 10% higher.
The surface is shaved close to a perfect circle with a slick finish, then given a special electrodeposition coating. Friction is lower than with a slick finish alone or a PTFE (Teflon) coating, and the coating resists peeling, so the light pull lasts. It is also pre-stretched to reduce initial stretch.

The 31-strand construction bends more smoothly than conventional cable. Installation is easier even with today's tight routing around the bars, and operation feels lighter.
The tight twist means less stretch and greater load strength. About 10% higher breaking strength, and pre-stretching means less re-adjustment after fitting.
Slick finish followed by electrodeposition coating. Lower friction than slick-only or PTFE-coated cables, with a coating that lasts.

N mark
SP31 needs dies and special plating that are hard to produce in Japan, so Nissen made dedicated dies (with the N mark) in Taiwan and produces it there to its own specification. All Nissen products other than SP31 are made in Japan.
Every lot is tensile-tested when it ships from Taiwan and again when it arrives in Japan, and any lot that falls short is returned or scrapped. Then staff inspect each cable by eye and by hand before packing. Genuine SP31 has an N mark on the nipple at the end of the cable.

Outer Casing
Stainless Outer27 Colors
Nissen replaces the steel coil normally used in outer casing with stainless steel. It resists rust, and the metal coil shows through a clear colour coating. A polyethylene liner inside lightens the brake lever pull. One outer lets you enjoy dressing up and upgrading at the same time.
The brake outer has a 5 mm outer diameter for 1.5 or 1.6 mm inner cable; the shift outer is 4 mm for 1.2 mm inner. Sold in 2 m lengths, enough for one road bike, in 27 colours from Clear and Clear Black to traditional Japanese colours.

High Performance
Direct (brake) uses thicker coil wire with tighter gaps, greatly reducing compression under load. It keeps the flexibility while raising stiffness and giving a more direct braking feel. Recommended for mechanical disc brakes.
Premium (brake) adds a PTFE liner, also used in medical and semiconductor equipment, for lower friction and better durability. Sold only as a brake set with SP31 inner cables. Shift Ver.3 uses a thicker coil to handle the fine adjustment of 11-speed shifting.

Vintage Outer
Italian · FrenchReissued 1950 ~ 1970
A reissue of the steel round-wire outer casing made in Europe from about 1950 to 1970. With a liner that the originals never had, the lever pulls lightly. Vintage in looks, modern in performance.
The colours were matched again and again to come as close as possible to the outers of the time: Black, White, Silver, Red, Blue, Yellow, French Blue, Celeste, British Green, Legnano Green, Sakura, Wakakusa and Indigo Blue, 13 in all. For brakes, sold in 2 m lengths.

A reissue of the outer casing used by René Herse and Alex Singer in France from about 1950 to 1970. Its hallmark is the wavy pattern where the round coil stands out on the surface.
Vintage ColorsColours matched to the originals

The vintage outer with a stainless coil and a clear coating. The round-wire winding brings it closer to the originals. Clear, Clear Black, Classic Red, Laser Blue, Clear Purple.

An aluminium alloy coil brings the weight to about 27 g per metre. For 2 m, a standard steel outer's 115 g becomes 55 g. Developed with reference to the aluminium outer once made by France's CLB, with four aluminium caps included.

A reissue of Campagnolo's spring outer from about 1960 to 1970, right down to the winding direction. Italian model 210 mm, Japan model 310 mm.

Cable Guide
Fit & InstallRubi Workshop
Brake and shift cables differ in diameter and construction, and the basic rule is to choose an outer that matches your inner. Nissen itself recommends consulting a mechanic who can see your actual bike about installation and compatibility. At Rubi Workshop we choose the right combination for your bike and install it for you.

Not for hydraulic brakes or electronic shifting, and the right cable can vary with your levers, brakes and derailleurs. The stainless shift outer has a coil construction, so Ver.3 is recommended for 10 to 11-speed shifting. If your levers start to feel heavy or your shifting drifts, it is time to check your cables.
We check your bike, levers, brakes and derailleurs, and choose the right cables.
See the housing colours in person and match them to your frame, bar tape and grips.
Lengths that never pull even at full steering lock, with housing ends cut square and finished cleanly.
We re-adjust brake clearance and shifting, and check again after the initial stretch.
